...which so far he has failed miserably.
I daresay 90%+ of British people probably have no clue who he is or why he is here, or care for that matter.
However, this is his first foriegn trip as the Reps candidate, his first stop on that trip is in the city which the whole world is currently focused on, and almost the first words out of his mouth are "It's hard to know just how well it will turn out. There are a few things that were disconcerting." It's just downright rude and unstatesmanlike.
If he was here as a past organiser of an olympics offering advice, then fine, but he's not, he's here trying to show his credentials as a statesman. And part of that means you dont walk into someone elses party and go "who chose chocolate cake, i prefer victoria sponge, oh and those cups arent stacked right". Instead you walk in and say, it's gonna be a great party, or you say nothing.
The only thing the press can talk about just now is the olympics, that is to be expected. If a dog jumps through some hoops - olympics! - a granny baked a flame cake - front page! - the US Republicans Presedential Candidate commenting on someone elses party - Go to town.
An experienced international statesman would have known this, a man finding his feet as the nominee whos claim to fame is making money and orgainsing olympics, unfortunately didn't, and his team were too busy putting out their own fire to tell him. They've said all the right things since, but the horse had bolted.
