It's honestly one of the weirdest fandom things I've come across on the internet. I watched most of an episode of the new show about a year ago just to see what all the fuss was about and because I had vague memories of the original cartoons. While it appeared to be relatively decently animated, it is clearly a show for little kids. The fact that it is popular amongst teenagers and adult men is utterly confusing to the extreme.
