I'm not a big fan of the standard large mattress futon ...

I own one that guests can use, but I have slept on it before, and it was all right. Not as good as my actual bed, but it does the trick. My thing is that I don't like the futon for sitting on when it's in sofa form. I don't find it as comfortable as an actual sofa. Specifically, I think I miss arm rests on the ends, and with mine I find that I can't sit all the way back without feeling uncomfortable. But that mileage may vary with different models, so I couldn't speak for the one you're looking at.
The ones that seem mainly to be a large mattress against a frame that's folded in half, those are never very comfortable for sitting. The standard fold-in-halfs sofas that are more comfortable for sitting usually suck for sleeping because the 'bed' is appallingly uneven. I'm hoping the kind I linked fixes both problems, it was pretty comfortable for sitting, maybe after my trip around the city tomorrow I'll go back to the futon land and try laying down on it.

I've found futons okay for sleeping on, but imperfect for sitting on.

I wouldn't do it. just get a nice bed that's the right size for your place (prob. full)
