Just wondering, my last 2 hires are great young professionals and both are saddled with over $100K in debt.....and one just got her BS (the other has a BS and MBA). This is crazy. So, a few questions for the RAFO crew:
1. How much debt did you accumulate while in college (or are tracking to accumulate for you current students)?
the total accumulated debt stopped at $45000. It is now slightly lower than that, I have been paying it off slowly over the last 5 years or so.
2. What are your loan terms? How long and how much per month?
Meh. It is a government loan, and actually split into different conditions. I have one loan where I pay 4% of my income until it is gone, and another which is set to be paid off in 20 years. I can pay it off faster if I'd like, but the conditions are such that if I want to take a loan for some decent living arrangements, it'd cost me more if I did not save up some cash to start with...
3. What was your major/area of study?
I have a MSc in Physics, most of which were concentrated on solid state physics and electron transport in nanostructured materials. And later on, I did a master of education - much of which were completely useless.
4. If you had a chance to do everything again (school, major, debt amount), would you? What would you have changed, if anything?
I'd probably do engineering with a physics focus. It's really not much of a difference, we took much of the same classes, but the engineering people had a title which counted for more when applying for jobs And I'd probably not do anything to do with education - pay is lousy, and working conditions suck big time.

I haven't got them yet, but if I go into law school I may end up acquiring some.
