i think the pelt still smelled like squirrel, as all the dogs loved it/wanted to eat it! temeraire Send a noteboard - 06/04/2012 10:50:26 PM
it was a squirrel pelt stuffed with a plastic bag rubber banded onto an rc car. this robot is much more realistic, though.

I wonder if the scientists (or you, for that matter) used squirrel scent to make it even more realistic. My dog has come to associate that smell with utter and abject failure (she once treed a squirrel in a hollow a foot off the ground, only to have her nose bit when she stuck it inside). Good thing my family doesn't hunt, as she'd be a poor hunting dog, despite being a Lab. Then again, we didn't train her to be one, either.

well, i think the thing that matters for the snakes is heat, so they probably didn't bother with smell too much, though anything sensitive enough to care that it smells like a squirrel should still be able to tell. the reason rabbit and squirrel pelts (and real wool) are used in dog training are that even after being treated and preserved they still smell enough to be very very enticing. every time i've gotten a toy like that, one of the animals has devoured it very quickly... i once had a bunny fur thing that the cats ate before i ever got to train anyone with it dogs with their 200 million - 2 billion neurons dedicated to smell are far more sensitive than people can really comprehend.

i also think it's funny that despite genetic programming - because labs are programmed with a specific part of the predatory sequence of eye-stalk-chase-grab bite - they still can be off by a bit... genetic drift is entertaining.
"it's like the real world, except there's dragons!"

cw, you are missed...
