At one time, wasn't insurance just for "big stuff" like surgeries, emergencies, etc...?
That's how it still is for veterinary medicine. If you even have pet insurance, it's for the costs that aren't day-to-day. They're for when your cat gets hit by a car, your dog develops osteosarcoma, or your horse gets a nasty colic. Everything else is paid for out of pocket (actually, so are these things. Insurance companies reimburse clients, not pay for them). This creates an unfortunate situation for veterinarians when we have clients that can't pay, but that's partly because a lot of clients don't prioritize or budget the health costs for their animal appropriately. If you didn't do that for your OWN health...well...you have no one to blame but you I suppose. Anyway, it keeps the costs for veterinary service relatively low without a lot of profit left over for your average practice. If you charge too much, no one will come to you at all!!
I'm not saying insurance on its own is bad...but couldn't a solution be to move away from insurance altogether?
