It does boggle my mind a bit, but I suspect (due to a football saturated brain) it is like the popularity of rechristening Americas Team the most hated team in America: Sturgeons Law says 90% of everything is crap, and many people substitute identifying evidence for that law for sophistication. 
If nearly everything is crap, the most wildly popular forms of crap will be the most offensive to people offended by the fact nearly everything is crap.
Short form: Even though the best things tend to be popular, that is a fatal flaw in the eyes of those who use "banal" and "popular" interchangeably.
