I'm kinda drunk. But I will say that there is a jazz station around here, and when I was a pizza delivery driver, I hated it for the very fact that it played anything modern. Yes I am a poor white guy in his twenties, but I have a reasonable musical sensibility which includes a more than passing awareness of classical and jazz musical trends. Modern jazz is vapid and annoying. Sounds like elevator music. I can't stand it. Electric bass in jazz music, in general, makes me sick.
Of course, nothing is concrete. We have a festival here in the summer with jazz and there are, of course, interesting things happening everywhere, at all times, that happen to fall into the category of jazz, whatever that might mean.
But there's nothing really like the sixties, as far as music is concerned, and jazz is no exception.
I feel like there's more to be said but i'm in ono shape to say it.
Good night.

Does anyone actually like contemporary/modal/free jazz?

There's very little atonal music at all that I enjoy. I can't think of any jazz examples. *NM*

I suppose it's kinda cool to play in the background while looking at an artsy exhibition

Pretty much my stance. Pleasant muzak, but not something I'd go to a concert for. *NM*
