There's a big hole in their plan Lews_TherinThelamon Send a noteboard - 14/03/2012 10:31:21 PM
But before the researchers can actually do any of this, they first have to find tissues with undamaged genes, and restore the cells after thousands of years of being frozen.

And, why is this news? It's the same idea they've had for years, and they still haven't come any closer, since they haven't and probably won't find enough undamaged DNA.

Oh, and there's nowhere to put it even if they do succeed, except for zoos (as Celia pointed out). And then it has to survive an extreme inbreeding situation and adapt to a world where every virus or bacteria has a head start on its immune system by a few thousand years (of course, this could also work in favour of the mammoth, but I doubt it).

Sure, I'd be as excited as anyone if they actually succeed with this, but... No, I'm sorry; it's gone and it won't come back. The money and the technology is better used on still living species (or recently extinct ones, such as the baiji).

First of all, yes, some zoos do. Secondly, woolly mammoths eat a LOT - 15/03/2012 12:06:47 PM 580 Views
They are still herbivores, they can't be that expensive to feed - 18/03/2012 10:16:22 PM 538 Views
