I'm talking about doing it in your head. 11 X 4334. So, with the other method, it would be 43340 + 4334. Not exactly the fastest way, unless you are really good at adding and keeping the numbers still in your head. But, with me method, it would be 4_ _ _4, some quick adding, 3+4, 3+3, 4+3, and that's 47674. Alot faster, I think.
Turn what you just did sideways.

It's hard for me to focus on the standard adding formuala when there at least 5 digits. Remember, I have to hold those numbers in my head. That's both set of numbers as well as the result I am calculating. On paper, heck yeah man that other method is awesome. And so is the method I was taught. I just timed myself and it took about the same amount of time on paper. But in my head, it's way faster for me to do my method. Again, that's only because adding involves trying to hold still 3 sets of numbers. And it's harder the more digits there are.

More my fault for having a algebra textbook that obsessed with abnormal base calculations

That is wayyyyy more complicated than 10x+x. But if it works for you, I am happy. *NM*
