The actors of Friends were making 1 million per episode in season 9 and 10. Actors in other similar "hot" shows, make similar amounts. Same logic to hot movie shows.
Why shouldn't a webcomic which can create similar joy, albeit in a different format, also raise similar amounts of money. Need I point out that with many of these pledges you are also receiving product for the services (this is not pure profit for the author of Order of the Stick). For example you can get 8x10 posters of the entire cast of Order of the Stick for $25, or for a little more you can get 1 of the 7 Order of the Stick graphic novels that Rich Burlew has published over the years. Donate about $300 and you get all 7 of the graphic novels.
--------
You also need to pick a different country than Japan which has the third highest gdp in the world, is in the top 25 for gdp per capita, and has a lower poverty rate than the US.

The Order of the Stick webcomic raises over $1million in 30 days on kickstarter!

The real moral here may be that PBS should offer greater icentives.

Yeah, but they were not being paid by their (probably far less numerous) viewers.

That is very interesting in the context of the recent and ongoing piracy debates.

except double fine is more of a technical project than a creative one

Not really- the reason people kickstarted Double Fine is BECAUSE of the creative part

my point is that it appeals to the tech crowd, which is typically better when it comes to $$$
