At least not publicly. I like Charlie Daniels (about the only "pot smoking rebel country" I know unless you count the Allmans and Skynyrd) as much as the next man, but a pet peeve of mine is people saying, "old country is good," only to reveal they mean stuff from the '60s or even '70s when country music was well into its Hollywood dotage. Just because some C&W singers decided to hop on the "folk music" bandwagon and all it implied once it became popular does not make them in any way representative of country music that actually WAS folk music. In that respect, The Orangeblossom Special is still more folk AND more country than any long haired country boy.

I understand your pet peeve and acknowledge that my reply was made hastily and was effectively superficial. I will clarify by saying that I enjoy classic country in a sense, yet am not all that familiar with it -- the likes of Lefty Frisell (sp?), Patsy Cline, early Cash, or if I could stretch even further and say Chet Atkins, are some examples. But I am also fond of the later stuff insinuated by my original reply, i.e. Waylon and Willie, Merle Haggard, et al.

Once, driving through a nature preserve on an Indian reservation, I listened to a local radio station all afternoon that played nothing but this latter kind of "classic" country, and I was surprised how much I enjoyed some of the Loretta Lynn, Conway Twitty kind of shit.
