I do wonder a bit which lawmakers Fox thinks "pressured" Komen.
Joel Send a noteboard - 03/02/2012 08:29:50 PM
I don't want jack to do with this thread but I figured I'd give a news up date. My only comment on that is that I am more than a touch bothered and/or upset that it's basically taken as a given that the reversal is a result of mounting pressure by lawmakers and pro-choice groups. So add in here a touch of warning to everyone about the costs of politicizing any given charity group and a note that should you be considering donations between two apparently equal options for charitable contributions in terms of your money and most definitely your time, you may want to choose the less political of the two. And that you should always be very careful about politicizing anything you don't have to, it always invites jackals through one door or another.
Speaking as a very ardent pro-lifer and no fan of PP, I have no personal objections to Komen resuming funding for breast cancer screening through them, anymore then I'd have issues if they were funding screenings through a neo-nazi front group, so long as the money is clearly and transparently not going to assist in any tangible fashion a given specific action I object to. I've also got no beef with anyone who declines to donate money to an organization which they feel is either doing something they disapprove of or aiding someone who does, even if it's simply by letting them enhance their image as decent people by hosting it. I also feel obliged to mention that I don't think buying the pink bucket of fried chicken really grants a lot of moral license to condemn or condone this groups actions, and I really don't think any elected officials had much business speaking up on the subject. And to rub some final salt in the wound, I don't think what a charitable organization does or does not do is a particularly good reason to start up a debate about the ethics of abortion, if you want to do that, open a thread on it.

I never got the impression any lawmakers applied any pressure either way, at least not in official capacity. I doubt anyone could spend as much time in Bush 43s administration as Nancy Brinker did without acquiring a few far right friends (or have been named an Ambassador by Bush without already having plenty,) but that is not the same as a Congressman applying pressure AS a Congressman rather than a friend and/or ally.
My own impression (nothing more) is Nancy Brinker had intended the break with Planned Parenthood for a while and thought the House investigation (which even the Komens statement calls "political" and explicitly denies is "criminal") plus a timely new "rule" gave her cover to do so. Again, apparently she was mistaken.
So, I agree with you: Politicizing a charity is bad for the charity. My guess is all the Komen executives who resigned in the last 24 hours agree also.
