If people really want to be offended though they should be offended by the fact that we spend twice the much money on breast cancer research as we do on prostate cancer even though close to the same number of people die from both. But that is another debate of course.
All true.
Like it or not we outspend on breast cancer because the campaign to support it has been so successful. Fear of breast cancer is an issue that unites women no matter their race, religion or politics. Sending money to an organization best known for doing abortions poisons that well.
And that they sue other charities who attempt to use the words "for the cure" or the color pink, but that's neither here nor there.
It only "poisons the well" for the people who look at it that way. At this point, there are probably just as many (if not more) women who feel that a clinic that provides low-cost cancer screenings (etc) is an important investment.
It doesn’t really matter how the money is spent, there a lot of women out there who would rather burn their money than let it go to Planned Parenthood. Take my aunt for example, my uncle runs an oil company and all she does is spend money and do charity work. If it is a cause she believes in or one that she believes is sheik, she would have no problem dropping a grand to enter a bike race supporting it. Not only that but she can call twenty or so of her dearest friends and they will show up as well. Let them think that even a penny of that money is being spent on abortions and they will shun your event and tell all their friends to do the same and my aunt will be happy spending her money on $100 flip-flops and organic facial cream. She is very health conscious and has great insurance, she will get her screening either way.
That is also true; however, just as your aunt exists and chooses her charities, there are others who do the same for the PP side. I mean, $400,000 was raised immediately after the news came out. They can't have everyone, but when politics plays a bigger role than finding a cure, we're getting skewed.
If they were raising money for women's productive health then it would be foolish to not give money to PP but since that isn't their goal it was foolish to let their happy fell feel good movement that everyone from the NFL to Target supports be dragged into one of the most divisive issues in the country. If Komen isn't staying up nights trying to find a way to gracefully break the link with PP and all of its political baggage she should be fired for incompetence. Her job is to raise money and to stay the hell away from political causes that will hurt that goal.
Not really. Their job is to raise money to help women gain awareness and to monitor the state of their health (breast cancer screenings and referrals for mammograms) and use that money wisely to try to find a cure. If too many concessions are made for politics, they're failing. I also read that they have ceased funding for stem cell research, which is also political and against what they expressly claim to be for.
Susan G. Komen cuts funds to Planned Parenthood. (with updated edit)
