Private universities are much older Rurouni_Kenshin Send a noteboard - 25/09/2009 02:21:27 PM
In Israel, for example, all the best universities are public. Well actually all universities are public ;) But there are some big private colleges. They attract some standout lecturers with their big money yet are still not nearly as good as the universities. Now this is obviously because most of their students are second choice. It is the class that matters not the lecturer.
I realise today the private unis in the States have both the best students and the money so anyone that can afford it would rather go there but how did this come to be ? At some point in time did a bunch of top students decide they want to pay extra despite qualifing for a perfectly reseaonable public education?

Most public universities only started construction after the Civil War, while the Ivy League schools go back to colonial days. Thus the private schools were far more prestigious. Who would want to teach at a new public school when you could teach at Harvard or Yale? Therefore they stayed higher quality and that has remained true to this day.

Also, because of their endowments from alumni, they're richer than public schools. Harvard has a $50 billion endowment.
When the Wolf King carries the hammer, thus are the final days known. When the fox marries the raven, and the trumpets of battle are blown.
