How exactly is this being scored? 14/17 Joel Send a noteboard - 17/12/2011 01:25:54 PM
1. The three gifts that the Wise Men brought to the infant Jesus were traditionally gold, frankincense, and what else?

Cartman: You mean to tell me I can never get a platinum album with a Christian Rock band?
Michael Collins: No, but you can go DOUBLE myrrh!
2. What is the date of the first day of the Twelve Days of Christmas?

I should know this, seeing as I now live in a country run by the Pope (that does not know it.) (8 I really only have two educated guesses:

The last Sunday of Advent (meaning even if Christmas falls on Sunday, as it does this year, a fortnight holiday would run through New Years Day) OR

alternatively, if I am to focus on that "twelve days" thing rather than a full two weeks, starting them from 20 December would have the same effect.

You may have noticed by this point that I have not actually given an answer; that, of course, is because I still have no earthly (or heavenly) idea. I was going to ask girl-me (which is perfectly fine, since girl-me is still ME) but she does not know either. I considering bundling her up with the wrapping paper and receipt so I could exchange her for a new girl-me, but she just made chocolate cookies with granulated sugar on top, so I am kind of in a bind (at least until I have eaten all the cookies.) :(

Um. Returning from tangent, and no longer able to delay the inevitable, I will compromise between the two (so to ENSURE I am wrong! :|) and go with twelve days of Christmas beginning the day after the last Sunday of Advent, which will be Monday, 19 December this year, and run through New Years Eve (but not New Years Day.)

Um, yeah; having checked myself now I DEFINITELY overcomplicated this, but htf can the "Twelve Days of CHRISTMAS" run until 5 January?!
3. When drilling for oil or gas, what is a Christmas tree?

Um again. Another one any Houstonian should know. I will go with the derrick, 'cos it kinda looks like a Christmas tree, in a vaguely pyramidal way.
4. What phrase is used for a late-night church service on Christmas Eve?

No idea; I would say Christmass Mass, but that seems a little too obvious.
5. In Charles Dickens's novel "A Christmas Carol", what was the name of Tiny Tim's father?

Bob Cratchett
6. A yule log is a large log which used to be put on the hearth as the foundation for the fire - on which day?

Christmas Eve, I guess.
7. In which book by Louisa May Alcott did someone say "Christmas won't be Christmas without any presents"?

Little Women who rediscovered their priorities during the nations bloodiest war.
8. What is the English title of the Christmas carol which is "Adeste Fideles" in Latin?

O Come All Ye Faithful seems the most likely translation.
9. In the song "The Twelve Days of Christmas" ("On the first day of Christmas my true love sent to me..." ), what total of gifts was given over the whole twelve days: 78, 280, or 364?

I suppose it depends on how literally we interpret the song, but if we take it to mean all gifts listed for a given day were given on that day the answer is 364 (if we take it to mean the previously listed gifts were not repeated in subsequent days, 78.) To be clear, I am going with the first option, 364.
10. According to Clement C. Moore's "The Night Before Christmas", Father Christmas had eight reindeer. Can you name six of them?

Donner and Blitzen are the easy ones, Dasher and Prancer (of movie fame,) Comet and Cupid, and I am very grateful I do not need more than that. I wanna say there should be a Dancer and Vixen in there somewhere.
