It's also pretty common (at least in the mid-west) for an older adult to start teaching his or her kid(s) to drive in empty parking lots or back roads before the kid is eligible for driving school. I mean not every parent does this of course, but I knew quite a few friends who had a "cool uncle" or older brother/sister/parent (usually dad) who did this. My own uncle let me and my brother drive around under supervision in big, empty parking lots to get used to a car as well as just to let us have fun.
I let my niece (12 years old) drive on back country dirt roads. Yup, I'm the cool Uncle. I still wouldn't let her drive by herself, of course.
