The biggest thing about driving is being aware of others in your area, and gauging how you and the car you're in will handle a given situation. It can loom large at first (I never experienced the fear you describe), but eventually becomes completely natural.
I used to enjoy driving, but I spend so much time in the car now on my commute the last thing I want to do now is do so for fun.
