Also, and I this may not apply to everyone, but I believe most Americans see Thanksgiving as a more extended family holiday. Thanksgiving is the big family gathering with your grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins, which is why the biggest travel day of the year is right around November 25. Christmas is more nuclear family with smaller gatherings and less traveling.
