So do you think there is no cause whatsoever for protest?
Dan Send a noteboard - 21/11/2011 03:31:04 AM
I'm talking about apart from how the actual Occupy Wall Street protests turned out, which is not good, do you think there was absolutely nothing objectionable going on in our current system of Government and Finance that merited a protest? Work may not be a right, but certainly we have a right not to be misled and robbed by corporations taking advantage of Government laxity.
Now it's about whining publicly without actually affecting any true change or even having a clear message/platform to stand upon.
When I was young (from 10 on) I was working, regardless of whether I was paid, I had a job (familial or other neighborhood work) ... when I got old enough to go on to college, I chose a 2 year degree path where 99% of my friends chose 4 year degrees to go after. I paid for it myself and with student loans that have been repaid (2 years out of college I was debt free).
I knew my goal was to come out of college with something that could and would assist me in finding employment, now, kids go to school as a right of passage to get their party phase done with ... and as Tom mentions in his post they take ridiculous degree fields and then whine when they cannot find practical employment in said degree. College education is not a right, it's a privelege, and one that if planned out and used appropriately, in conjunction with the proper work ethic, can yield a good paying, truly career oriented job.
It seems as if people today believe that what they want to do is the same thing as what they should do. "I think I'm really deep, so I should be a philosopher! .... then wham, bam, thankyou Ma'am ... I'll have a high paying job as a philosopher!" Which in the real world is not the case at all.
There is an essential lie that people of the OWS/etc are believing ... and it's being perpetuated by their myopic and self deluded pack mentality - it's this LIE: I am entitled.
College isn't a right. Working isn't a right. High pay isn't a right. It is merely a matter of A. planning properly, B. executing that plan. C. picking up and adjusting to change if unforseen circumstances affect your plan.
Aisha's friend (from her post) seems to have a rough go of it - but that's life ... if the OWS people want the Gov't to protect them from Real life - they might as well commit suicide, because it's probably a better/faster resolution than waiting on the Gov't. to solve one's problems. People do what they have to survive, or they fail and become a dreg. If I lost my job tomorrow I would be doing whatever I could to regain some gainful employment, even if not in my field, even with lower pay ... because ultimately I believe in self determination, and by whining about something which the Gov't can't control and expecting instant change, you are merely perpetuating your own childhood.
Ultimately it is to the individual to care for themselves ... the fantasy world these particular protests are occuring under is only going to harm the participants, because right now, someone else from their graduating class is out there pounding the pavement somewhere and will find a job well ahead of them ...
(I am aware that it is not just unruly college kids protesting, but the general cross section matches that demographic ... so forgive my generalizing, but it had to be done based on the posts above).
