There's no reason to let a 10 year-old be in a shower with an unknown assistant coach

your view of parenting is extremely simpleminded. Just what was my mother supposed to do, never let me play with the next door neighbor (another kid my own brother's age) who had never shown signs of touching children or being creepy before? She couldn't read the kid's mind.
Yes, but no one is calling for the prosecution of peripheral figures in that scenario because they should have known. By the same token, how is Paterno supposed to know enough to take allegations seriously, based on what he thought he knew of the accused?
Could she have known? Probably not and that happens to be the case with many molestations. They often happen to be the people that parents are supposed to be able to trust, oh like say, a nationally known football coach in one of the most respected colleges in the nation who started a foundation to help struggling, underprivileged kids by taking them out of their shitty element to a place where education, discipline and hard work are celebrated? Oh those naive (dumb?) parents!
I don't know the details of how the kid came to be in a Penn State shower with the coach, but I have a hard time imagining any scenario where a parent shouldn't be looking for more information. I can't imagine my own parents allowing me to be on a college campus with only strangers at age 10, particularly around a football program, who probably have the worst media presentation of their behavior of almost any other college demographic short of frat houses.

What evidence did Paterno have exactly? I have not found anything definitive on that. *NM*
