But we don't live in an ideal world (and if we did then there'd be less need for said defence). We live in a world where not all parents are good parents. Or even there at all. Should we just let those children suffer because their parents are degenerate? And even good parents can't be vigilant all the time.

Sounds to me like you blame parents when something bad happens to children instead of the people who actually do the bad things. (Actually, it sounds rather like you blame the children too.)

We need laws and the police and special services to look after our children as well as parents because this is far from a perfect world.

I agree with the point that it can be taken too far, and that often innocent people suffer in the court of public opinion and that is wrong. But more wrong is to give paedophiles and other bad people free reign just because we think all parents can protect their little ones.
