Female reindeer only shed their antlers once? What I read indicated that they shed them at the start of every summer after the birthing/calving season was over.
I read something else that indicated that the females might use their antlers as a calcium reserve to get them through growing a baby, and that after the baby is born they shed the antlers and grow new ones later in the year to store up calcium for next year. But I don't know how accurate that idea is, and I didn't include it in my blog post.
But if they only shed once, that's definitely interesting. Do they shed after their first calving season and then grow permanent antlers that never drop off?

It's going well. Busy, but it's ok. My 6-yr old asked me to trim his testicles, though.
