Hyphens are used to join words together - like in tax-free limit - and dashes are for separating thoughts/adding extra information (like I did in this sentence).


I tend to use the word "dash" for all those things without thinking about it, but that's incorrect.

Of course, just to be annoying I have to add that a proper em-dash is formed with ALT-0151 (—). :p

Well, yes. But I wanted an en-dash for my dashes and I don't know how to make them except with ALT+hyphen. I don't think that works in Internet browsers, just in the programs we use at work for creating and editing documents. :|

An en-dash is formed on the Internet (and in most text programs) via ALT-0150 (–). It's like magic. Keyboard magic.

Tim keeps trying to get me to learn those keyboard shortcuts but I prefer to leave it for the nerds. :P
