... only three cities in the United States have a higher population than Vancouver or Toronto: New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago. Everything else in the US has fewer people.

A further six cities have a higher population than Calgary but lower than Vancouver or Toronto: Houston, Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Antonio, San Diego, Dallas. All other US cities have a lower population than Calgary.

But perhaps you are using some less quantifiable definition for what makes a city?
