But I am questioning their motives and the logic behind the decision.

Their motives are probably fairly pure, LGBT-ites [-ese? -ians?] do tend to take a fair amount of abuse even on college campuses and would have to legitimately be considered a minority prone to more than minor discrimination. Logically? I suppose probably not, I don't thing LGBT-ites suffer any sort of handicap pursuing education the way blacks or women did in the past and to some degree still do. But there are lots of scholarships targeting people of specific nationality or religion too, a Croatian club might sponsor a scholarship for Croatian teens, they're not exactly a discriminated group here nor is that likely to be the basis for the scholarship. The church was probably just feeling a wave of guilt for past discrimination or reveling in being more enlightened then other denominations, not sure what their attitude toward gays is. Not a big deal IMHO, but I can't say I enthusiastically endorse it either, I'd want to know the specific circumstances from the horse's mouth... for all I know they may have some recent history case of turning down a recipient because they found out they were queer and this is atonement or something, or a wealthy member might be feeling guilty for acting unkindly to someone who was gay and made an anonymous donation in this form. Without knowing the details, I don't want condemn it.
