A generic GOP vs Obama at least describes a loose connection, since favorable/unfavorable often picks up people who vote for someone as the lesser of two evils. Matching up candidates this earlier in the primary, or even late in a primary, is fairly pointless. Very few partisans will change their vote based on the nominee this early, and moderates will mostly vote based on the last few months of campaigning when everything is a direct comparison of A and B.
