I saw a rumor about Pataki on Political Wire last week, and there seems to be a lot of buzz about Christie now (though the latest at Political Wire is that NJ Dems are weighing a recall attempt, but leaning against it). One of the more recent PW pieces about Christie (IIRC) was that Pawlenty campaign staffers are waiting to see what he and Paul Ryan will do before deciding which ship to jump to now that Pawlentys out of it. I even saw something earlier about Fred Thompson. Party watchers have said Palins upcoming schedule screams "presidential candidate" and several Tea Party activists are predicting she'll declare on Labor Day.
Meh. Can't see any of those getting enough traction to get anywhere except obviously Palin, but she won't win either, so if she's smart (or her advisors are) she'll stay out.
I still think she's promoting books and honoraria, and eternal speculation about "will she or won't she" only furthers that goal; I'm just passing along some of the scuttlebutt I've seen.
But whyever would NJ Dems want to recall Christie? Part of the praise for him is that he's so moderate and bipartisan, as far as I'm aware...
The way I heard is that he's been very successful at pushing a Republican (albeit a Northeastern Republican) agenda despite a solidly Democratic legislature in a long time Democratis stronghold. Unfortunately (or not), when the 1796 US presidential election spawned tickets, it also made partisan impeachment/recalls rather useless since they just promote the second in command. There seems to be some debate over whether that's how the law reads in NJ, but from what I can glean from this story: They wanted to do it for the same reasons TX Republicans would want to dump a popular Democratic governor if he got a state income tax through a heavily Republican Lege, but gave up when they realized 1) it would be VERY hard, 2) it might just promote a Lt. Governor who'd be as bad or worse for Dems and 3) it could not only be unsuccessful but backfire by making Christie more popular than ever as the triumphant victim of a partisan attack.
Obama's THAT vulnerable (hovering around 40% is a generous assessment of his approval rating) and the GOP field is THAT weak. Romney should cruise to the nomination and give us a choice between the open corporate crony or the one "still in the closet". Obamas best hope, according to conventional wisdom and the actions of his re-election campaign, is that Perry's nominated, but this is probably just Perrys Name Recognition Tour: Obama vs. Romney, and may the worst corporate shill win.
Seems likely, certainly. Though I'd still give you two suggestions: one, don't forget how very much can change during the course of a campaign once it really starts; and two, but that one is probably rather futile, you do realize you don't have to say this a million times per day for people to know what your stance is.
It's a corporate election, as they've all been for some time, and reiterating that as often as possible for the year going into it doesn't seem unwise since I consider that fact a mortal danger to both America and the world. It's funny how things change; four years ago wads was telling me how crazy, biased and uninformed I was for saying Hillary was unelectable and now rt is telling me how crazy, biased and uninformed I am for saying Romney's the only Republican who can beat Obama. Obama's the incumbent, but Romney's the corporate lackey of the corporate party; the only question in my mind is whether the narrative of the idealistically liberal Obama fighting the good fight against corporate America by giving them trillion dollar handouts at every opportunity is more valuable than an open corporate crony. My bet is it's value increases daily; bread and circuses, but the less bread you provide, the more circuses you need.
