So this girl told me recently that she has had a crush on me for years. She also said she had seen the signs from me and was scared to follow up on them until now.

That I had given any signs at all was news to me. I guess it's just that I'm a nice guy, so she thinks I like her. And apparently she's been building up this fantasy for a very long time.

I'm really not interested. What's the best way to break it to her?


There's no avoiding her feeling somewhat like a fool when you tell her you don't feel the same way so be as nice as you can about it and then never bring it up again. Hopefully she will also never bring it up again and you can both pretend like it was never said and all sorts of awkwardness can be avoided in the future.

That said, not doing anything about it would be bad, don't lead her on by not telling her you don't feel the same way. Step up and find a nice way to tell her the feelings aren't reciprocated.
But wine was the great assassin of both tradition and propriety...
