Does America have mandatory car insurance? Nate Send a noteboard - 12/08/2011 09:42:17 PM
Is it constitutional to force people to buy it? It can be pretty expensive. And it would seem to be the same sort of deal. You pay car insurance so that no one is caught with their finances and livelihood ruined after a car accident.

I suppose a difference would be that while car owners might be forced to buy insurance, no one is forced to buy a car. But when you have a car, you need the insurance to protect it.

It seems strange to me (from an admitted outsider perspective) that health care is viewed differently. Everyone has a health, by default. When you have a health, should you not need insurance to protect it, to make sure that no one is caught with their finances and livelihood ruined after a health accident?

I don't know all the ins and outs of the US health care laws and insurance laws and how Obama's legislation works. I'm just wondering things out loud.
