A federal grand jury in San Jose this week indicted a former Cisco (CSCO) engineer on computer hacking charges in a case that has already sparked a bizarre series of legal showdowns, including one involving a Canadian judge who blasted the networking giant and federal prosecutors in a ruling earlier this year.

In a five-count indictment handed down Wednesday in U.S. District Court, prosecutors accuse Peter Alfred-Adekeye of illegally accessing Cisco's computer system after he left the company in 2005.

Alfred-Adekeye, a citizen of Nigeria and England, formed a Palo Alto-based company called Multiven, which wound up embroiled for years in legal sparring with Cisco.

The grand jury indictment appears to follow related criminal charges that have been under seal in federal court since last year.
