the power went to his head, he pissed people off and started lying his ass off. same thing that happened to every leader since time immemorial.
Unless you listen to all the people screaming, "SOCIALIST MUSLIM TERRORIST111" at him while he's handing them trillions of dollars in corporate welfare and tax breaks. It IS possible for a leader to have both integrity and effectiveness, it's just increasingly unlikely in a political system this badly broken. With government restricted to only two parties, both of them wholly owned corporate subsidiaries, the other 300 million people in America are little better than underpaid overworked employees waiting for the final round of layoffs to put them on the street to slowly starve to death.
im not entirely sure i believe that anyone actively seeking power can have integrity. way i see it is that power is like homer's beer = women metaphor. you'll wake up one morning surrounded by empty cans, things screaming at you and a f***ed up liver.
No one's completely immune to temptation or base motives, after all, just as no one is completely devoid of integrity (sometimes the latter can be harder to believe, but is just as true). Still, history is full of leaders who viewed public service as just that and, for the most part, acted accordingly, to the benefit of those who entrusted them with power. That doesn't make a Churchill or Jefferson sinless godlike beings, but that they WERE mere mortals yet, despite human flaws, generally acted in the interests of their nations rather than themselves underscores the appalling lack of that ability in modern leaders. Where now are "profiles in courage" such as Sam Houstons? The best we have is JFK winning a Pulitzer Prize for books about them that Ted Sorenson actually wrote.
Power can be a drug, definitely, but most drugs can be beneficial, sometimes necessary, if used wisely; when people knowingly dive into addiction it's not the drugs fault.

I think he started by lying his ass off, but as to power, he never seems to have used it.

True, but his major failing (and his partys) is that he didn't even try.
