and based on her lies to the authorities she should be guilty of child neglect at least. If you dont report your child missing for 30 days and you had nothing to do with their disappearance then maybe reporting the missing child on day 1 would have helped the police find the "real" killer/kidnapper, the childs remains WERE found not too far from the home after all.
Where I discovered she wasn't convicted of perjury, just, as you said, lying to the authorities, which is a very different thing (a misdemeanor, in fact, of which Wikipedia she was found guilty on four counts, not seven; this is probably a good example of why your opinion on the case matters so much less than that of the jury). Law isn't about what you think or know, but what you can prove, which is a very good thing. The prosecution didn't prove it's case so the defendant was found not guilty; if you think she WAS guilty your beef, complain to the prosecution about what a sorry job they did on such a solid case.
The prosecution really bungled this one. The Defense attourney IMHO didn't even do that good of a job either. Too late for a mistrail now though. She got away with it. Why can't people just take care of there children? That poor little girls life must have been horrible. There was talk of sexual abuse by the father and she was most likely murdered by her mother. Grandparents lived with her and they didn't do anything about it and her grandmother even looked up Cloroform (sp?) on the computer which in my books makes her a damn accessory to it. That poor child needed a whole new family. How could anyone do that to a child? I guess society failed her as well. No one missed her for a month? No one? Not one damn lousy fuckin person? Then the fucking prosecution let her down just to top it off. Poor little girl could have come to my place and I swear I am not the best father or will I ever be a father of the year but she would have been fed, educated, taken care of, and loved. Why is that hard for some people to do? Sorry bout the rant Joel. I know you don't have the answer but this makes me fucking sick.
I hear you, man, and I'm the last person to condemn a good rant. There are no winners here, just a dead little girl and a lot of people pointing fingers. I wouldn't want to be on that jury; even if your name is never leaked to the public (which is far from guaranteed) you're still left a choice between giving a woman a slap on the wrist for probably killing her own infant (accidentally or otherwise) and dumping the body, or sending someone to death row for what may well have been an accidental killing the prosecution never proved. The worst part is there's no obvious way to prevent it happening again short of jailing people and taking their kids for suspicion of intent to do something horrible.

The judicial system IS based on the belief it's better to free the guilty than condemn the innocent.
