It's only the UK and Commonwealth that play rugby. It would be like asking a bunch of Europeans questions about baseball.
Many people aren't interested in history or geography, so why is it more likely that everyone would know Walesa or the lakes? They are clearly area specific as well. Same could be said for literature and Tolstoy.
