So my dad got a virus over the weekend, and I am currently fixing his computer. The virus is known as the "Vista Antivirus 2011" also known as the "Windows 7 Antivirus 2011" it poses as an os/antivirus update so that you are more likely to confirm the install and once on their it is a bitch.
So after taking open this acer slimline computer and popping out the harddrive, cloning it, and restoring the sucker, his computer is squeaky clean. Problem is it isn't fast due to the hard drive being slower than dirt (his processor, ram, and nvidia graphics aren't the problem) it is just his slow hard drive. It is a 7200rpm 320gb wd caviar blue, but when you are restoring, installing, and deleting all the oem crap the hard drive just can't keep up. The computer desperately needs an ssd.
The real reason for the post is this. I am going to be spending the next few hours getting the software on this computer up and running, installing updates, getting rid of junkware etc. After I do this I won't be messing with this computer for it is my dad computer and I don't touch it unless he comes to me stating that is broken. Any software you recommend for I am likely to forget stuff for when something isn't on the computer I just usually add it on the spot with my computers.
Newest drivers and bios
Microsoft Security Essentials
Firefox
The newest internet explorer (my dad is a creature of habit and he prefers IE...sight)
Adobe Flash
Microsoft Silverlight
Foxit PDF
Microsoft Office
Heroes of Might and Magic 2 and 3.

You don't have to be a big fan to acknowledge it's at least very nearly as good, and free.

Foxit is much faster than Adobe, as well as having less frequent annoying updates
