neat question. temeraire Send a noteboard - 24/06/2011 06:36:09 AM

I suppose there are actually several questions here, although they're variations on the same one:

1. How much of a language should you know to tell someone you know it?

be able to have a conversation or written exchange.

2. How much of a language should you know to list on a resume or work bio?

realistically, conversational fluency and written communication fluency. if you intend to work in a language, you should have good/fluent or native competence.

3. How much of a language should you know to list on social media?

heh. people probably think one class is enough.

4. How many languages do you know and what are they?

i am fluent in english, hebrew, spanish and have good command of italian (i don't use it as much). i understand about 50% of all the german i hear, and i'm going to learn it eventually. i studied old/middle english, old irish, and a bit of old norse, and a teeny tiny bit of old persian
"it's like the real world, except there's dragons!"

cw, you are missed...
