(in no particular order)
1) It supports more file formats than the Kindle, including the presently-popular ePub format (which the Kindle does not)
2) I have no desire for a keyboard and thus did not want it taking up space on my device
3) I like being able to buy straight from my NOOK if I want to (although I don't tend to)
4) Supposedly the NOOK takes microSD cards, although it seems my particular model does not? Obviously this was not enough of a deal breaker for me to utilize my gift reciept and return it for something else. It just means I won't be able to carry QUITE as many books around with me...still plenty for my purposes!
5) A small degree of brand loyalty. I don't PARTICULARLY enjoy ordering books online and I still prefer to experience of going to the bookstore. Actually, I prefer to buy from used bookstores, but if I want something new I'm usually better off going to a store like BN. I grew up preferentially shopping at BN, so I continued to do so. There's something about BN I love so more than Borders/Amazon. I'm not sure what it is.
EDIT: I did not get the color or touchscreen NOOK, so I cannot vouch for their comparison to their counterparts under the Kindle brand. I also did not get a G-network NOOK, as I am perfectly content to just use Wi-Fi.

Nook e-ink touchscreen. Doesn't have the idiocy of the Amazon DRM, and it's conveniently shaped. *NM*

I don't think it's accurate to say real books will never be obsolete.
