SS is a tax, there's no product purchased. For paying that tax now, you become entitled to future return payments. It does nothing for you in the immediate, and in fact may never do anything for you period. It's a monetary transaction.
a nationalized health care plan is nothing more than paying into a system of entitlements, it's just a quicker payout than SS. i.e. - you don't have to wait until you're 65+ to cash in. the real problem is using the powers of congress to mandate buying *private* insurance instead of just creating a medicare style program that will cover people who don't already have the insurance to begin with.
