Quite a while ago, one of my cats started peeing outside the litterbox. And I have been working and working on finding a solution to get him to stop it for over six months. I've had him checked by a vet and determined he doesn't have any health issues that are causing this. I've changed litters. I've made sure the boxes are kept squeaky clean. I've changed their location. I've scrubbed the carpets with enzymatic cleaners and rug shampooers. I've put their food in the area where he's been peeing (since cat's won't pee where they eat. I've put down aluminum foil (they're supposed to HATE peeing on that for some reason). I've sprayed repellent. Nothing works. He either keeps going there or just pees next to it. And I can't just keep him out of the room, since it's an apartment and it's the main living area, so there's no door to close it off from the rest of the rooms.
Finally, at my wits end, I bought a bunch of plastic car mats and covered the carpet completely in that area of the living room after giving everything a good cleaning and letting it dry completely. And for the last couple of days, I didn't find any pee anywhere, but I kept smelling it. And last night, I finally found out why.
He's been peeing inside the TV stand. All my electronics are ruined (the pee got inside them). The stand is ruined. The wood shelves are cracked and buckled from the moisture. And when I found this mess last night, I broke down sobbing. Not because of the electronics. They can (eventually) be replaced. No, I was crying because of what it meant.
I can't keep him. I've tried everything, and he won't stop. And I could get thrown out of my apartment if my landloard finds out. I've spent SO much money trying to fix this problem and SO much time cleaning, and I can't live like this anymore.
But there's nothing I can do with him either. No one will take a cat who pees. And the Humane Society won't place him with anyone either. He'll be put down. And he loves me, and he doesn't know what he's doing is wrong. How can I take something that loves me and bring him down to be killed??
I don't think I can do it. But I can't go on like this either. I love him so much, but I can't let him ruin my apartment and everything in it. I don't know what do do, and I'm just heartbroken.
I don't know if there even is any advice anyone here can give me (I feel like I've tried everything). Maybe I just needed to get this off my chest. But if anyone does have any advice, or even just a kind word, I would be very grateful.

...which involves keeping him in a cage with a litter box so it's his only option of a place to go. It's heartbreaking but we have had some luck with that, so it might be one more thing to try before you get rid of him. I'm sorry, I know it's very upsetting. Maddening that he won't stop and that he's ruining your stuff, and sad that you know you can't find a placement for him
