Why not? What if people want to break in to your house and use your data to get to know your routine? Of course, you are not the specific target. But it should not be too hard to set up a criminal organization around information left online about people's whereabouts.

The accessibility of that data is such that they would have to steal my computer or my phone to get it, in which case I'd have more to worry about. I'll be concerned when Apple starts selling tracking data.

What about people who intend malice? Sure, not embarrassing yourself is one thing. But there are things like identity theft.

Identity theft is pretty hard to pull off without an SSN or a credit card number, and I don't give those out. :P

What is your argument against it.

That abuses of power begin when we relax protection against invasion of privacy.

An internet detective?

When my then-girlfriend learned the name of her soon to be roommate in college, within 5 minutes we had the girl's pictures, high school GPA, lacrosse position...

Of course, it was just an example. But it's basically intended as a way to show that while current owners of a vast wealth of information may be benign, future owners may very well not be.

That is why I try to remember that nothing on the Internet is private.

Do you know how much it costs to retain that much data? Do you know who will pay for that?

Ah, but the question was asked in the context of privacy issues. Certainly there is a host of logistical reasons that would make this difficult.

I doubt that it's the babbling that they'll be interested in. But e.g. the Stasi killed people for making bad political jokes. They shot them in the neck.

Looks like they didn't think it was...

...a laughing matter.

YEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH
