Privacy, or, why I don't get to have fun on the web. Ghavrel Send a noteboard - 29/04/2011 11:05:55 AM
Still, I'm contemplating getting an Android phone in the near future. The Samsung Galaxy S II. And I'm sure that vodafone is aware of my current location, even with my old old phone that predates GPS chips. It's complicated to avoid being tracked.

I have to say that this does not particularly concern me.

1. Do you care about your privacy?

Yes.

2. Do you avoid sharing things online to increase your privacy?

My general rule is nothing I'd be uncomfortable with my employer seeing.

3. What do you think of the argument: "I've got nothing to hide anyway."

It tends to send me into a frothing rage.

4. What do you think is the worst that can happen with your personal information?

I plan to be a lawyer and possibly a judge. I can't allow personal information to interfere with that.

5. How do you use other people's information online?

I'm a super creep online; I will gleefully stalk a person to ferret out info about them.

6. What would happen if Google was bought by a Chinese company?

There'd probably be a lot of lawsuits.

7. Do you think that ISPs should be forced to do deep packet inspection on your data, to combat child porn?

No.

8. Do you think that ISPs should be forced to retain data for over a year? To combat terrorism.

I'm actually okay with this, given the absolute inaccessibility of said data by anyone without a subpoena.

9. Do you ever think about the fact that a great number of repressive regimes would have never imagined the vast wealth of private information people are currently freely sharing online?

I imagine those regimes are rather more concerned with the political capabilities of the Internet than the ability it grants people to babble about their latest genital piercing.
"We feel safe when we read what we recognise, what does not challenge our way of thinking.... a steady acceptance of pre-arranged patterns leads to the inability to question what we are told."
