With the increased connected nature of our lives, our lives are being tracked more often and in more ways. Our physical locations, who our friends and relatives are, what we like and dislike. Whatever we share online, is being used by a wide variety of companies and individuals, with different levels of integrity and different levels of beneficial results to our lives.
Personally, I'm increasingly uncomfortable with what can be known about me. It's not that I do a lot of nefarious things. It's that I know there are people out there who are interested in doing nefarious things with information about me (not me specifically, it's more of an opportunity thing).
That has resulted in my continuous diminishing of my online presence. I've cancelled my linkedin acccount. I'm not on facebook. I am not on twitter.
I am on google. Of course, if I were consistent, I'd not use google at all. But I have, for now, given in to the ease of the shared calendar and the massive inbox. However, I am already on the lookout to replace that with an in-house exchange server.
Still, I'm contemplating getting an Android phone in the near future. The Samsung Galaxy S II. And I'm sure that vodafone is aware of my current location, even with my old old phone that predates GPS chips. It's complicated to avoid being tracked.
1. Do you care about your privacy?
2. Do you avoid sharing things online to increase your privacy?
3. What do you think of the argument: "I've got nothing to hide anyway."
4. What do you think is the worst that can happen with your personal information?
5. How do you use other people's information online?
6. What would happen if Google was bought by a Chinese company?
7. Do you think that ISPs should be forced to do deep packet inspection on your data, to combat child porn?
8. Do you think that ISPs should be forced to retain data for over a year? To combat terrorism.
9. Do you ever think about the fact that a great number of repressive regimes would have never imagined the vast wealth of private information people are currently freely sharing online?
Thanks!
