Wha...? Joel Send a noteboard - 27/04/2011 04:53:06 PM
Two things.

One: This is an interesting point, and I haven't heard it made before. I vaguely remember the stuff coming up now and again. Of course, the main difference from birthersim (is that a word now?) is that the Trig-theories would never have any practical implications.

Two: Why does the American sign for we love you look almost exactly like the satan-sign thing black metal rockers do?

I'm not sure why they think it's misogynistic; it's no more inherently so than it is racist to question Obamas qualifications: It can be so, and definitely trends that way when a preface to claims (or craven insuations) he's a Muslim terrorist, but questioning whether McCain and George Romney met the "natural born" qualification wasn't racist. It was specious (in general, the children of Americans born abroad are natural born Americans, though technically the legal precedent only establishes that for people with American FATHERS, so the legal standard might need refinement in Obamas case) but not racist.

Setting that aside, however, the controversy itself seems like an exercise in absurdism. Why would Palin lie about pregnancy and, apart from integrity issues (of which such a lie would hardly be the greatest), why does it matter if she did? Really, why does anyone CARE if she faked her pregnancy, and what line of reasoning prompts someone to ask a question like that? "Y'know, John Glenn says he was the first American in space, but did anyone SEE him up there? Inquiring minds want to know.... " No, idiotic minds want to know.

The sad thing is it DOES appear all liberals must "rush" to disavow this lunacy; Limbaugh is already citing a rather derisive Politico story on it as PROOF all liberals (which includes Politico, as a member of the MSN, by definition) are out to get Palin any way they can. Apparently their overtly dismissive coverage of the non-story shows that liberals are making "a game" of destroying Palin in a way unprecedented since the days when liberals unfairly maligned Nixon (I wish I were making up that last part. ) Sometimes things like this make me wonder if they're instances of people burning the Reichstag, but that's really just more of the same paranoid thinking; the sad truth is that there's plenty of madness out there of every political persuasion, and too much of it is vicious and vindictive to boot. Misogyny or not it's reprehensible to invent a conspiracy that makes a mentally disabled infant a political football.
