it's the spirit, not the letter, of the law that i have a problem with moondog Send a noteboard - 15/04/2011 10:19:27 PM
Keep in mind Obama angered a lot of people in AZ when he weighed in on SB 1070, which revolved entirely around the need to identify people, while the motives of the law are pretty obvious, the law itself seems fine, there is certainly nothing wrong with states expecting people to meet basic standards for identification to be on the ballot. And as pointless and fairly unnecessary laws go, this falls pretty short of the 'ban Happy meals' standard of nosy busybody legislature. Take a step back from the whole birther stuff and your political alignments, there's nothing weird or wrong about requiring a birth certificate to run for any office, their motive for passing the law isn't really an issue. Obama has a birth certificate, providing a copy to each state barely even qualifies as a minor inconvenience, and I imagine most of the population would assume POTUS candidates already did.

on its face, the bill is innocuous enough. as you said later here, who doesn't support having candidates prove they are qualified under the constitutional requirements for office? the problem is when a fringe group like the birthers get legislators to write laws making their fringe views legally binding when there is not a strong reason for the law to exist. a movement who can't accept the evidence presented to them for the last three years is not trustworthy enough to dictate what laws the majority should and should not be subject to.
