I would argue that collegiate sports is as well pretty well enmeshed in "academia" since they have been there from the beginning. Why do you think performing arts is different then football or basketball? If anything the athletes are the ones being screwed since they are not allowed to receive degree in sports even though it takes as much skill time and knowledge as any performing art.
My point is you can't expect to just be able to select one group and say that group is not worthy of being part of our education process without other people saying that other groups may not be worthy either, and it could be groups you support. It is hard to come with a logical argument of why performing arts is more worthy of being part of academia then sports are. Do you have better than your simple and unsupported claim that they are more enmeshed?
I am personally in favor of limiting scholarships, and grants and student loans for that matter to students who are studying things that are worthy. As long as I get to decide what is worthy.
