How is that statistic presented? LadyLorraine Send a noteboard - 09/04/2011 03:13:54 PM

So I don't believe it's quite as bad as what you portray. Quite a few former players end up doing nicely outside of school, as several schools (including my alma mater, the University of Tennessee) have established post-playing assistance programs to help former players obtain their degrees.

Because if you fail, you're not allowed to play. Additionally, players take a LOT of "fluff courses", for this exact reason. We had a course here, "Intro to Natural Disasters" or something, that was FILLED with athletes. Why? Did they have some sort of interest in using the baseball team to bat meteors from the sky? No. The class was PISSASS easy to pass. They finally pointedly made the class HARD, so that people who were taking it were the ones interested in the course and not an easy grade.

I'm not trying to say that I think any player who doesn't make it to professional sports is doomed. Plainly that is not the case and many players do keep the "Student" part of their college career as a priority.

But that's their personal choice. The adviser will tell them "well, that's at tricky course load and you might fail and not get to play...here's some easier courses."

It is nice that UoT has a post-game assistance plan for the ones that need it. I'd be happy if I saw more of that.

**I do want to note that this is based on my understanding of NCAA rules, personal experiences, and understanding of a few other schools who's players I've talked to. I fully admit that I could have a skewed picture of how much individual schools encourage academics over athletics.**
