Giving out scholarships for recruiting purposes is like an investment. Winning teams bring fans, which bring money. Presumably, this money can be used on academic programs, financial aid for non-athletes, or other kinds of development projects.*

I think there's a problem when it gets out of control, but on the whole I think college sports is a good way for schools to raise money for themselves.


* I'm just making stuff up here, I don't have any data.
