Even if it is low intensity, running can take a lot out of you; you burn through sugar quite quickly. Whenever I'm running more then 7 or 8 miles, I always take some boiled sweets with me to suck on, or I get dizzy and have to stop.

When you're first starting to increase your distance, and when it's by a fairly drastic amount (in this case, you were doubling your distance, so while it was only 3 miles, proportionally it was quite a lot), your body won't be used to it, and will burn through its energy faster.

So, uh, yeah. All in all, I recommend the gatorade. If you do longer runs more often, you won't need to as much.
