I had a reaction similar to Tom's Mother. Avendesora Send a noteboard - 18/03/2011 01:33:23 AM
It was the worst I'd ever had. I went to a woman's birthday party. (She has 10 cats and 3 dogs- the house had just been vaccuumed and dusted. The place did NOT smell like cat). In 15 minutes my sinuses were so bad it sounded like everything was underwater. Within an hour, I had gone outside on the porch to get some air twice and had taken an inhaler puff which it didn't work. I finally said, "holy shit. I have to leave". I honestly didn't know if I was going to have to call my husband to come pick me up. The drive was only 15 minutes. I got home, took a benadryl and warned hubby that he may have to call the ambulance. I am glad the benadryl kicked in, but it was a rough night. I don't think I can ever go in that house again. Not unless they put all the cats in the barn, steam clean the rugs and furniture, and I don't sit down. IF the windows are all open. On second thought- no.

Now- my mom's house doesn't make me react like that. She has a dog and a cat and cleans very well. It still bothers me a little, though.

So I finally went to the doctor to find out why I've been feeling so crappy this winter, and hopefully get something to treat the Sinus Infection from Hell. But after seeing the doctor, I find out that I don't have a sinus infection at all.

I have allergies.

At the age of 30, I have suddenly developed allergies.

I haven't seen an allergist yet, so I don't know what I'm allergic to yet, but I am terrified that it is going to turn out to be cats.

I can't live without cats. I can't bear to part with Jens and Sven. I don't know what to do if I turn out to be allergic to them. I've heard that some people who are allergic to cats manage their allergies and keep the cats, but I don't know how common it is or how well it works.

If your allergies are still new, you may only have mild reactions for a while and they may slowly get worse. You can guage how you feel when you're between cats or at a place with no cats. Maybe it'll be ok? I was ok for a while with keeping hubby's cats out of the bedroom and getting a couch I could wipe off (vinyl or leather). But I also avoided snuggling them, so obviously that wouldn't work for you.

I love animals. I am allergic to cats and dogs but not birds, so I'm getting chickens. I have the land for it and I'm not squeamish. :P At least my pet will make me breakfast. I will wear a mask while cleaning the coop bc of dust allergy. And if I'm extremely allergic to them too... Well, they can grow to be a certain size and be sent to freezer camp. But that's a last resort.

Anyone else go through something similar? Any advice for me if I turn out to be allergic to one of my favorite things in the world?

You know, you could be allergic to something else. My allergies are worse when the windows stay closed all the time starting in september and are fine in the spring when everyone else is suffering. I'm allergic to dust and mold.

Good luck and let us know what the results are.
