We have been watching it most of the day Druid Send a noteboard - 23/02/2011 01:00:15 AM
The epicentre was shallow, under Lyttleton, which is built on a volcano. They say it was a different fault line to the big one.

TV of the Cathedral....what to say? The modern 5-6 storey building that collapsed on itself....again, nothing that can be said.

A lot of the damage was due to liquifaction of the underlying sediments - they turned to quicksand.

Geologically it is Australia's fault, as we are trying to push over the plate Christchurch is on. So we have sent search and rescue people (the first team was in the air 60 minutes after the quake).

I once spent a couple of days in Christchurch. Beautiful city. Very English. Nobody deserves an earthquake, and Christchurch got two.

I am happy your family is OK. I suggest you get them to safety in Edinburgh as soon as you can. Now that city is geologically stable
